Rivington Pike Fell Race

Report from James Boult

It was heading on for 2 in the afternoon before I decided to make the trip over to Bolton to join the ten other Harriers taking part in the 3pm Rivington Pike fell race. The 5km event started from close to The Queens Head pub, and headed up to the courses namesake before a fast descent took us back to the start finish point. 264 competitors, among them Ron Hill – there to compete in his 40th and final Rivington Pike event – took part in what was a fast paced affair, taking in some lovely scenery and a testing climb.

Danny Collinge was the first Clayton home in 7th place, with Jacob Boyle in 9th. Richard Briscoe and myself made up the top four for Clayton – giving us 5th place in the team results. Ron Hill crossed the finish in a very respectable 38:43 to complete an incredible milestone at Rivington Pike.

It’s the third year I’ve done the Guiseley Gallop now and this year it was a new route due to a bridge being washed away. I thought it was a much better route as it was almost all woodland trail, with very little road and with it being mostly dry recently, was quite firm under foot. Good route, bottle of beer/wine for every finisher, all good!

Report from Judith Carey

As a new runner, the Hollingworth Lake 5k race in 2015 was my first ever race. I had only been running approximately 6 months, mainly park run events. So 12 months on from last years race and JR’s winter training I was very keen to see my progress today!

We did a recce dog walk of the route on Saturday as the course had changed slightly from last years race and it helped me know what to expect from the race today and how far the final stretch was to the finish.

I was hoping the weather would be as per the brochure with the sun shining and an ice cream van…well almost!! The rain held off, it was cloudy and very breezy on one half of the lake, but as we ran round it became nice and sheltered!

I really enjoyed the new route, it’s a good flat course with a fast downhill start, I got carried away with the other runners at first and then slowed my pace down so I didn’t burnout. Around 4K my lace became unfastened and I wished I’d remembered to tuck them in my laces lol! I didn’t stop to fasten it because I knew it would affect my time so I was distracted from the pain of running my last 1k thinking about whether I would fall over in my sprint finish! With an incline to the finish line, increased pace, avoiding the pot holes on final stretch and watching my lace flapping I crossed the line knocking 3:47 mins off last years time and a 5k PB.

As usual I was nervous at the start and I finished thinking I felt I could go faster…so I know I’ve more speed to come!

It was great to run with other Claytoners and I always appreciate the support and cheering me to finish line! Well done everyone who ran today, some great results and PB’s .

Lancashire Fell Championships

Plenty of Clayton Harriers took part in the Lancashire Fell Championships in Sabden on Easter Monday. With the event taking part on our doorstep on familiar stomping ground, it’s no surprise that Team Clayton took plenty of prizes at this event.

Our Juniors did very well winning the U12 Champion title for both boys and girls, Jackson McKay and Ella Dorrington. In the Under 14 race, Briony Holt had a great run finishing in second place and first girl becoming Lancashire Champion. They also took team awards.
